John Purcell Paper A5(ish) sketchbook number 4, begun Septemberish 2002

Mostly more stuff relating to work on the Horrible Histories magazine. You will note the preponderance (is that the word?) of googly eyes in an effort to match my style to that of Martin Brown, the illustrator of the HH books. MB himself actually drew googly eyes rather less consistently than I did in my imitation of him, but I guess that's a bit like the way impressionists overuse catch phrases to identify a character in a vocal impersonation. So I guess what I'm saying is that googly eyes were Martin Brown's "play it again, Sam".

more recently...

Five recent spreads from a cheapy A6 Seawhite of Brighton Eco sketchbook. How much time I spend doodling in it is partly determined at the moment by how well the writing of the next book is going. Happily, it's taken a decent while to fill these pages...

For those that care about such things: almost all drawn with Noodler's ink from a Pilot Falcon fountain pen (which is proper lovely).

mostly fixed

Much has been restored in the wake of the naughty hacking unpleasantness. Most of the images have been restored to this blog and my main website - until I get it newly built - redirects here for the time being. But if anyone spots any problems then do please let me know. Ta very much for your kind understanding. Both of you.

hacked

Oh dear.

Apparently my website has been hacked. This shouldn't make this blog unsafe, so far as I understand, but may mean that some or all of the images here (which are hosted on my webspace) may disappear for a while (or possibly forever) as I try to sort things out. This is not my area of expertise, I confess. So, it may be more than usually a bit of a mess here for, um, possibly quite some time. Apologies if so. Bear with me.

More rotten stuff to bore you. Mostly these are duff early versions of some early work for Eaglemoss's Horrible Histories partwork (for which I did much work over a period of about four years). These are iffy Blackbeards (he turned out a bit better in the finished illustration - at least that's how I choose to remember it). Quite a bit of this sort of thing coming up, which is a bit dull but I always vowed with from the archives posts (aside from the occasional removal of a phone number and suchlike) that I'd put up all the stuff, good or bad, however embarrassing. And hopefully this will encourage me to post lots of newer stuff to alleviate the boredom.

And I've checked ahead and seen that there's some quite fun penguins due in about six or seven months' time, so that's something to look forward to.
